Pravda now claims Gagarin was not the first cosmonaut in space -- just the first to survive.

Thinking back on the 50's Russians, it surprises me not at all. To be perfectly honest, I am surprised that are not more of those sub-orbital parabolic flights that ended in dead people.

A very close friend of mine worked for NASA (Houston) for a while and her trip to the Russian equivalent put her in shock at their underlying carelessness.

I don't think it is carelessness so much as putting a low value on human life. We've done the same in the U.S. with experiments on prisoners.

Tribal, balkanized countries are two examples. The former USSR (soon to be USSR 2?) is the current case in point.

Indeed, I perceive a certain balkanization in the U.S. via the I'net. Vast multi-wing conspiracies, lack of respect for differing opinions. Even this discussion board is an example. Much as I try not to disdain other opinions, I have great difficulty suffering fools.

Yours for forming a vast scientifically/mathematically based conspiracy.

Best,

Anne

I, for one, appreciate your longsuffering with me.

I'm confident that reality will ultimately prevail, and will disproportionately afflict those who have foolishly chosen to align themselves against it.

You know, whatever else you might say about the Soviets, you can't say they were short on courage. Short on lots of other things, maybe, but not courage. Not only the protocosmonauts, but the soldiers of the Great Patriotic War and the guys who went in to put out the fire at Chernobyl.

Trooth. And I may have posed my original comment poorly. But you are correct.

One point I did not acknowledge that my friend also noted when she was in russia was the stoicism of living with nothing. And how the cosmonauts were freakin' amazingly strong.

Didn't mean it as a criticism of your post, just as a comment.

Without disparaging the real courage you speak of, I think there is something to be said for living under a system where such courage isn't required too often.

Such courage was not uncommon in Western history. Think about Napoleon's Russian campaign, the Civil War battles of Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Cold Harbor, and finally, the trench warfare of WWI. These bloodlettings eventually created an aversion to such useless sacrifices in Western Europe and America.

The Russian willingness to countenance the sacrifice of human life belongs to this previous era. It will probably persist as long as Russia remains non-democratic.
