This woman is unhappy that the drug she used to treat her narcolepsy was taken off the market by the FDA at the urging of Ralph Nader's group.

Wow. There are some interesting comments about Ralph Nader in that thread. I am entirely inclined to believe most of them, which means I probably shouldn't.

It does seems similar to something on another thread: Bureaucrats have nothing to lose by banning things. (Or by making them mandatory.) They can only lose by allowing people to use judgement.

That's why I believe in the spoils system. The politicians may appoint incompetent cronies to government positions as political spoils, but at least you can sweep out the cronies by voting their political masters out of office. You can't do that with civil servants.

And it's not like incompetent cronies aren't appointed by politicians now. Think FEMA. Or Harriet Miers. Or Ron Brown, in the interests of goring both major parties. It's just that the incompetent cronies are now surrounded by cynical, experienced, tenured bureaucrats with their own agendas.
