Whoops, local farmers' markets not superior in bug free products, nor does buying locally necessarily reduce 'carbon footprint.'

I don't know about the hygeine aspects, but I just got back from a couple of weeks in Toledo helping out my mother after a recent hospitalization, and took the opportunity to visit the farmers market in downtown Toledo on a Saturday morning.

It was truly a magnificent experience. Some very early spring vegetables, great selection of tomato and flower plants (from local family nurseries-unlike anything you can find in the big box stores), local honey, wild greens (the guy selling them told me he walks railroad tracks gathering them-but he will not even hint at the exact location-he was like the morell mushroom gatherers), a small time farmer who butchers his own cattle and will provide any part you want (eg. beef hearts which can never find here in Lower Alabama), etc.

I hope to be back there later in the summer for another experience.
