I'm pretty sure the massive motor and fan driving my swamp cooler is lubricated, and the air it pumps is completely unfiltered and goes straight into the lungs of my delicate tube dogs (whose cardiovascular systems are more delicate than our own.) No signs of harm so far; dachshunds normally act a little brain-dead. IP: Logged |

Uhh, how much contact does the air have with the lube oil anyway? I mean, lubrication systems are pretty much closed. Sure, there's some leakage, but I have a hard time believing its appreciable compared to the volume of air going through a jet engine. Also, isn't the bleed stream coming off of the compressor section, which is upstream of most of the lubricated parts of the engine? Frankly I'm more concerned about catching the flu from the other passengers. IP: Logged |

DaveL, you are correct- the bleed air comes from the compressor section. Given that the air source is usually several miles from the surface there's no need for filtering because there's nothing up there to filter up. The problem with air quality aboard an airliner has nothing to do with the bleed air and everything to do with the fact that the airlines have been allowed to cut the flow rate and recycle cabin air to the point where there is nowhere near enough fresh air to be breathable. ------------------ IP: Logged |

If the engine mainshaft lube is getting into the bleed air that ventilates the cabin at a rate that is of concern for the health of the passengers - then their health concerns are far-less-significant than the more-pressing issue, namely, that that engine is shortly going to stop turning. Bunch of nonsense. Note that the author is promoting his book on this topic. llater, llamas ------------------ "All things are ready, if our minds be so."
