http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,323051,00.html My workplace already has, 75 feet from the building, these bus-stop like shelters (which don't provide much shelter) to which the smokers are banished in all seasons and all weather. Now they'll need to build shelters for popcorn eaters. IP: Logged |

Not surprising. This has been floating around my office since the epidemiological results surfaced. Thank to the ancient ones, I have not had to deal with industry on this one. Bottom line from my guess is that popcorn manufacturers are simply going to reformulate their popcorn and substitute diacetyl for something else. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Well, on July 19, 2005, jurors awarded $2.7 million to a popcorn plant worker in Missouri for his claim of diacetyl-induced respiratory problems. Diagnosis: popcorn lung. There's a big difference btwn working in a popcorn factory and nuking an odoriferous bag in office or home. Dose = poison. The poor SOBs who worked to 'ameliorate' asbestos in bldgs (yet another gov't program w/ unintended consequences) had a ligit claim re asbestiosis. IIRC, other lung conditions were ascribed to asbestos removal that may well've been attributed to smoking (ubiquitous on construction sites in 50s/60s). I wouldn't be surprised to find that claimants double dipped on this one. As for nuked popcorn... it stinks to high heaven and the smell seems to linger eternal in the human nose. This time of year (which is either late fall or early spring -- no real winter temps/weather) -- we're currently burrowing into our favorite chairs before a wood fire w/ a bowl of popcorn and an Irish coffee in the evening. Popcorn is popped in a proper pot -- regular popcorn in oil, gaily exploding away while butter melts and parmesan cheese is gathered with ample salt and pepper. Delicious, tender and no nasty after smell. All hail Orville Redenbacher's original popcorn in a clear jar. I think the original stuff pops faster than the nuked stuff, but haven't made a side to side comparison. Nor do I intend to. Good day to all. Anne IP: Logged |

I've been wondering...has there ever been a fire in a popcorn silo? IP: Logged |

I nuke popcorn all the time. And I have been known to melt some real butter to pour over my freshly nuked Extra Butter microwave popcorn. So I may not be able to make a sane contribution to this discussion. I remember old-style (popped in oil) popcorn fondly. My grandmother used to use raw coconut oil as the popping oil, which was better than maybe it sounds. I don't know where you would even buy raw coconut oil any more. A hazardous materials recycling center? All those transfats... I like Parmesan cheese and salt on my popcorn, but I've never tried pepper. IP: Logged |

I've never tried pepper either, but I do like a little garlic powder with my parmesan. Not only do I like it, it keeps wandering hands from MY popcorn.(they only had to try it once) IP: Logged |

The freak who got it from bagged microwave popcorn was an extreme aberration. He ate multiple bag a day, and stuck his nose in the bag, just after opening. Inhalation toxicity from the plant at least has some basis. There is also a case of a worker who took home 55 gallon drums of butter flavored oil and used it in a small, unventilated trailer (the plant that he worked at shut down, the owners gave the workers permission to cart off anything they wanted, so no stealing involved). He showed up symptomatic, he was a worker, so you could blame it on that. However, his six year old son also showed up symptomatic. So, we've got 4 confirmed cases that are probably related to inhalation of diacetyl. One freak, 2 factory workers and 1 kid exposed is a bizarre, unique situation. Now, look at the consumption of diacetyl containing microwave popcorn and the fact that butter flavored oil has been around for 50+ years. I don't have any hard and fast data, but I would guess the total number of bags is in the multiple multiple BILLIONs. The total sales are probably not something that the companies want to share, but I don't know that for a fact. I am failing to see a problem here.
