Is criticized here.

Among other things, the study dropped Washington, D.C. I find that telling.

Unfortunately, some of the criticism is by Lott, who has lost some credibility.

However, I have to add my $.02:

quote:

n states in the highest quarter of gun ownership, the study found, the overall homicide rate was 60 percent higher than in states in the lowest quarter. The rate of homicides involving guns was more than twice as high.

Among the possible explanations for the higher homicide rates, the study said, is that states with high gun ownership tend to make it easier to buy guns. There are also more guns that can be stolen. And the presence of a gun may allow arguments and fights to turn fatal.

Another possible explanation, which was curiously omitted, is that people in states with high homicide rates have an incentive to arm themselves.

In statistics/econometric circles this problem is called simultaneity, that is you don't really know for sure which is the dependent variable.

Do more guns mean more crime, or does more crime mean more guns, or both?

Question- About how many accidental handgun deaths are there in the U.S. each year? Is there any kind of reliable data for this?

There was a category for accidental firearms deaths in the US mortality statistics from the bureau of statistics last time I looked. I don't recall whether it broke down to handguns.
