I've been taking Niaspan for years now; 2 grams a day. It takes some getting used to. The complaints about flushing are correct, but even worse is skin itching, which is just awful. What's worked for me is:


  • Work up gradually. I started with 250 mg Niaspan; when that bottle was empty I switched to 500 mg, then 750, and so on until I got up to 2000 mg.

  • Take two aspirin about 30 minutes before you take the Niaspan. If you start to itch or flush, take two more.

  • take after the evening meal and just before you go to bed. Nobody cares if your face turns red while you're asleep.

Seems to drop cholesterol fairly dramatically; about 50 points for me. Whether dropping cholesterol actually does anything for you is, of course, another question.
