Greenpeace charged with violating environmental law
quote:
The environmental activist group, the captain of the Arctic Sunrise and the ship's agent all are charged with misdemeanor criminal counts of operating a vessel without a spill contingency plan or proof of financial responsibility in case of a spill, as required by state law.
Seems kind of petty though.

I don't know if it is that petty. If it forces them to pay the same costs as anyone else, it starts evening the playing field some.

I hope they impounded the ship. Such a dangerous situation posed a major threat

I'd guess about 80%, maybe more, of environmental regulatory violations are paperwork things like this. The usual pattern is a press release from the EPA or equivalent State agency announcing that "XYZ Corporation has been charged with 12 violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act involving hazardous waste." Then there will be a list of the hazardous wastes involved, then some quotes from IRIS or ToxProfiles on what those chemicals will do if you bathe in them. Finally, the fine print will give the actual charges, which will be things like failure to provide a list of all the fire extinguishers in the plant, a misfiled disposal manifest, inadequate training records, etc. There will be nothing about XYZ physically mishandling waste.

Greenpeace has a history of being reckless and irresponsible on the high seas wrt the environment and safety. Their primary focus is raising donations by getting noticed in the press with their dangerous antics. If these clowns ever endanger my family as they have other, they will regret crossing by bow. What Greenpeace does is not petty, I hope they do jail time.

quote:

The state didn't pursue criminal charges against the group until the Arctic Sunrise departed from Ketchikan before the paperwork was finalized, despite an agreement to stay anchored, said Assistant Attorney General Jay Fayette.

The criminal negligence charges carry a maximum penalty of a $200,000 fine for an organization and a year in prison and a $10,000 fine for an individual.

a while ago, I recall that Greenpeace was involved in an operation in the North sea. They were using small vessels to "buzz" a bigger vessel, and slow it down; the story was that the bigger vessel was going to pollute something...

Anyways, this got a lot of attention, and it transpired that the Greenpeace people were regularly falling in the water, and the "bad" industrial types had to go out and rescue them. Apparently you don't live long in the North sea.

It struck me that an industrial corporation thing would have been hammered by the Health and Safety Executive for this sort of behaviour. It was obvious that a Greenpeace person could have lost their life from exposure. And then- if someone died, wouldn't there be a tremendous amount of publicity ?
