For the Third World:

quote:

Kraft Foods, the conglomerate built on macaroni and cheese, is working on a new and unusual product line — food that is not only tasty, but kills intestinal worms.

...

The pesticides, explained R. Douglas Armstrong, chief executive of TyraTech, are derived from plant oils. He would not name the plants, but compared the idea to the power of citronella to repel mosquitoes.

The oils attach to three olfactory and central nervous system receptors found only in invertebrates. When overstimulated, Dr. Armstrong said, those receptors produce unstoppable cascades of impulses in the nervous systems of insects or worms, repelling or killing them.

It is rather difficult to poison something that lives in your digestive tract. For a long time the antihelminth of choice was (IIRC) 1,1,1-trichloroethene - i.e., cleaning solvent.

Well, that is pretty silly. Mebendazole twice a day for three days nukes almost all worms, is dirt cheap, chewable, and tastes rather like orange Pez.

Of course that may not be the best flavor recommendation, but it wouldn't take much to make them taste like real candy.

Yes, yes, Pez are real candy...

Which, like citronella, means it doesn't really work. But somebody will get rich off it, so that makes it ok. I guess. I could care less about citronella, it smells nice and if you're dumb enough to fool yourself into thinking it works, that's up to you.

Interesting to note that citronella liquids are not registered for use on children under 2 years of age in Canada. DEET has a safer profile and can be used from the age of six months onwards. But it's a 'chemical' and ergo, evil.

Stoopid.
