With high electricity demand in the west I thought I would check how much electricity was being produced by all those new windmills yesterday. Zero, zip, nada.

However, I did find documentation of the terrible pollution being caused by the coal power plant at Boardman: http://www.iwindsurf.com/windandwhere.iws?regionID=219&siteID=244&Isection=Windcam

That is Mount Hood in the background and is about 100 miles away.

Man, you can't hardly see Mt. Hood for all the black smoke. Fireman must be making some awful big clinkers.

Look close, there are railroad tracks on both banks of the river and the interstate is on the Oregon side. You can clearly see that wind had picked up and it is a great day for sailing.

I was wrong about my zero estimate for California and SteveV did not catch me.

CPM, if you are going to credit yourself for making errors that others do not bother to comment upon, then you will qualify as TSTP.

CPM, I'm going to point out a few factual errors to you here, not that you care but...

In your Maryhill webcam link (on the WA side of the river looking west) I can count the number of the glaciers on Mt Hood being it a nice clear sunny day (9/23 11:15 am PDT). Where's the smoke and haze? Oh wait...there isn't any. There never is as there is ALWAYS a breeze from the west, and in that cam, Boardman would be behind you to your left a bit.

Any haze in that webcam would come from forest or brush fires, not a coal plant. And why is this coal plant you speak of CPM always such an issue? It's no wonder why the Columbia River is a paradise for windsurfers.

Looking at it again....CPM maybe you should get checked out for cataracts. Seriously.

Ed: added last sentence.

No really!!! Ever hear of sarcasm? I am glad you have finally figure out east and west. You are way of ahead of watermelons from Portland. If there is haze along the Columbia east of Portland, it most likely came from pollution from Portland and not from a power plant farther to the east.

The prevailing wind is from the west. Today there is no wind. Of course it is a WWYC race day. I have also experienced wind strong strong enoungh to turn over trucks in the Columbia Gorge from the east.

Wind from the south and east are particularly dangerous for sailing because because they are caused by storms and the nature of sailing in a gorge when the wind is not coming straight down the river. Several years back we canceled a race. Over on the interstate, seven were killed in a dust storm.

IMHO spring and fall sailing near WWYC is some of the best in the world. However, Newport and Sauselito (http://www.rntl.net/sausalitocam.htm) has better restaurants.
