Well, Cato's position on this is consistent with its position on all manner of things regarding government involvement -- government governs best that governs least -- or, more accurately, government involvement is fine as long as there is value added (defense, protecting property rights, etc.), which is not often. I thought Cato's corporate donations were more than 10%, but so what. I am not aware of any significant tobacco funding at Cato. Knowing a few Cato staffers (not Bob Levy), I find the idea they would be influenced by tobacco funding to be absurd.

It is. (Absurd.) Curious tho, when the tank/scientist/academic is liberal, the donations are seen simply as the donors support of the already-established position of the tank/scientist/academic. When the donee is republican or libertarian, the already-held position is said to be bought. Faugh.

The tobacco indusrty, and particularly B&W, have financially supported the CATO inst. and other people within the institute in the past. Tobacco money has payed trillions in research and higher education to some really serious universities and colleges (who if you look at it closely owe their existance to tobacco). But the point remains that this is one of the few bodies that do research that seems to not allow the money to influence the research.

I love how when controversial industries fund research it is "evil money attempting to influence" but when the money is left wing there is NO WAY that it influences the research.

Does anyone have the full letter sent to the editor by the anti?
