Spider-Man: Homecoming, that is. Very good, easily in my top 5 MCU movies. The acting was terrific, with veteran Tom Holland turning in a strong performance as Peter Parker, and relative new-comer Michael Keaton as the Vulture. Well acted, well paced, with a good amount of natural humor. For example: Peter accidentally pulling a tree-house down when he tried to swing from it, then getting annoyed that he had to run across a golf course because there was nothing to swing from.

The movie benefited greatly from not being an origin story. He already had his powers and knew how to use them. Most of the origin was covered in about 30 seconds of dialog with his sidekick. “How?” “I got bit by a spider”. “Can you shoot venom out of your mouth?” “No.” “… can I get bit by the spider too?” “It’s dead.”

The movie also had a very well developed villain. Other than Loki, most of the MCU villains have been pretty one-dimensional. Toomes/Vulture has a backstory, and an understandable motivation. The pre-title scene was basically his origin story.

The opening credits music was inspired. “This sounds really familiar” MGB: “Orchestral version of the cartoon theme”. “OOOH”.

Post title, the movie opened with Peter’s vlog of his adventures in Captain America: Civil War, and it was exactly as goofy as you would expect from a 15 year old. It did a great job of cementing that Peter really is a high-schooler. (It also helps that Tom Holland doesn’t look like he’s 30).

Tony Stark was in it far less than the trailers would have you believe, and that was a good thing. There is also a running joke with recorded PSA’s from Captain America that had me laughing.

I did have a few nitpicks (non-spoilery):

1. Run time 2:12. For a movie with a non-epic story line, this is too damn long. I know they shoot for the 2 hour mark for these films, but I really wish that’d be a maximum not a minimum. Still, it was well paced and didn’t drag in the middle like Wonder Woman.

2. A bit too much of Peter’s wonderment at the cool features in the Spidey-suit that Stark gave him. It really was too much like an Ironman suit, including an AI that he names Karen.

3. Action scenes were really good except for the climactic battle. At night, on an airplane. I couldn’t follow what the hell was going on. There was one point where the airplane was flying low over NYC and I had a major 9/11 flashback.

4. Horribly miscast Flash. (That’s his name, no relation to the DC superhero). He’s supposed to be a bully that picks on Peter. The kid they cast is not physically intimidating at all, and would probably get beaten bloody after about his third smart ass comment.

5. Pepper Pots cameo. Yeah, I guess Gwennyth Paltrow got over her snit about not getting paid as much as Robert Downey. Small paycheck is better than none, huh Gwen?

Maybe it's superhero movie fatigue, but I don't see what all the fuss is over this movie. It was actually kind of boring. My friends kept bugging me to put my phone away because they thought we'd get kicked out. The action scenes reminded me of the ones from Transformers, which I couldn't believe had made action scenes boring. To me it was just another superhero movie, nothing new, kind of ho hum. I did like Wonder Woman, so I don't know what to say.
