We really enjoyed this spoof. A spoof of...

Trumbo was a movie portraying Dalton Trumbo's heroic struggle to practice his art and his vaguely left politics when he was black listed during the Hollywood red scare. Was he a communist? Did it matter? He was an American citizen practicing his right to free speech... etc. He is mercilessly hounded by John Wayne and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper who get their comeuppance in the end.

Hail Caesar turns the question around and follows the trials of a hard working, religious, moral and ethical studio executive as he toils to honesty pursue the business of providing good clean fun to the American public, despite some of the flaws in his directors and actors, while struggling with the temptation to go work for Lockheed. The titular Hail Caesar is a movie he is trying to complete about the life and times of "the Christ".

His efforts are being undermined by an evil bumbling cabal ("study group") of communist writers and university professors attempt to insert communist ideology into the hearts and minds of Hollywood and ultimately America. Their efforts are supported by talented Soviet sleeper agents and the Soviet submarine navy.

In the end all attempts to indoctrinate and pervert are foiled by the cowboy hero. Really.

A lot of subtle jokes and less subtle jokes. Very sarcastic and cynical. My kind of movie.

Also thoroughly enjoyed it; I thought all the character actors did outstanding jobs. I note Eddie Mannix, the "fixer" was a real person and had a somewhat less white-bread life than portrayed.

Saw it last night. Liked it. Husband, not so much - he attempted to turn the sound down during the musical numbers.
