I'm wondering what kind of parents give their little girl a pet chicken when she wanted a dog.

Chickens are very useful. You can eat'em before they're born, and after they are dead.

Plus, chickens aren't a 6-18 year commitment. To Bruisers point, you can end your commitment whenever your hunger outweighs your desire for pets.
