If I was born and have lived in a country other than the U.S.A. I could still be taxed by the U.S. government if one or both of my parents had been U.S. citizens at some point, all to fund Obamacare?

If you are not a U.S. citizen and don't plan to be, why would you care how much the U.S. government taxes you?

That gives me an idea. If I started leveling taxes at foreigners, would some of them pay me? Hmmm...

It matters if your national government decides to honor the U.S. government's tax demands.

I haven't heard anything like that. Wasn't at Snopes when I checked yesterday, nothing from a search, either. I'm wondering if one government could get away with something like that - wouldn't the other governments get upset? Would every country in the world start taxing everyone else's citizens, based on ancestral homelands? Does that mean Africa would get rich?

Maybe when the law is finally read and understood in full, we will be able to answer...

American citizens have always been required to pay taxes on all income worldwide, regardless of their country of residence. The only difference now is that the IRS is cracking down on citizens who haven't been filing returns.

Sure, but the rumor seems to be that, a man who was born to US parents in a country outside of the US, but who is not a US citizen himself and never has been, will be taxed by the US in order to fund Obamacare. I can see where the parents, if they have not been naturalized to the other country, could be taxed, but it doesn't quite click for me that the non-US-citizen offspring should be able to be taxed.

There's a matter of a 9-digit number that hasn't been mentioned. If you were claimed you had to have one, and that starts the ball rolling.

I'm not sure, but my understanding is that anyone born to US-citizen parents is automatically a citizen (the same is true for Canada). Do we have any lawyers on the forum?
