Vancouver has banned doorknobs on all new construction, requiring lever handles in their place, to make doors more easily accessible to all.

I don't think the supporters of this ordinance have young children.

This also reminds me of one of my pet peeves...Entry doors should have push bars and pull handles. Not handles on both sides or bars on both sides.

I think this has been code for non-residential buildings in the US for some time now. My NFPA100-199 book is in a box somewhere or I would look it up.

I agree about the door handles; the main entrance/exit door for the building I worked in had handles, and I don't think I could count the number of times I pulled when I should have pushed or vice versa. Generally code requires that exit doors open outward and that a person with normal body and grip strength must be able to open exit doors (and any interior door that leads to an exit) with one hand. There are some breaks for historic buildings.

How many times have I caught a loose article of clothing, a coat sleeve, a pocket on lever handles?

Bets Far Side of all time.

We must have such an ordinance in Kingsport as all of our doors have levers. Thought it odd when we arrived, but used to it now.
