On hand-slapping, what are the rules? If we need to be all mathy and sciency, I'll probably be a fairly silent member.

I am determined never to slap a hand for merely being wrong or uninformed.

I'm talking more along the lines of citing Alex Jones as your source for a facially implausible claim involving a conspiracy theory.

Or asking the kinds of questions I see all too often at Quora.com. "Since we know that the earth is flat, then how are seasons possible?"

... Okay, maybe I won't ever have to slap any of the old hands.

Got our first request for membership from someone I'm not sure is one of the old timers. Facebook name: Kis Myas.

Um, yeah, of course I get it.

Just thought I'd check if it was one of you being clever.

Not me, but I do use another name on FB: Bubba Redneck.

Hmm. Apparently I can't add you unless you are already a friend or you ask.

Dang, I wish I was that clever. If my application is successful, we'll be up to 8, a 14.3% increase in membership.

Using information from the internet it should be easy to contact one or more of Bill's relatives. But this might not accomplish anything. Being 87 my time on this forum is likely limited in any case.

We could probably contact them through Facebook, but, IMO, it would be awkward.

Yes, that's what's really holding me back. I'm sure it could be done; I'm not sure I'm comfortable doing it.

I may, however, attempt this much: I can try to find a family member to contact, offer my sincere condolences over their loss, and ask if Bill said anything to them about preserving his Internet domains or web sites. If I get no response to the latter, I'll leave it alone. There's an off chance they'll say, yes, that was important to him, were you the fellow he was talking to? in which case we can pursue it further.

My intent at this point would be to revive the archives. I think Facebook is now a better venue for the forum itself.

That's what I was wondering about. You were talking to him fairly close to his passing. He may have mentioned something to his family and they've been waiting for you to step up.
