What causes this preference cascade? How does the word get out that this is a thing to do?

Maybe you should have posted this in the media section.

And what do you need to break down the cascade?

1. Effective parental oversite, that usually includes fiscal controls that limit access to arsenal building activities.
2. A strong moral compass (provided by some religions).

Well, yes, media publicity is kind of the big factor. I don't' know what to do about that in an age when communications costs are so low that the race to the bottom seems unavoidable.

If we were still living in a day of three television networks in the U.S., heavily regulated by FCC, perhaps one could enforce a rule against giving out the names of young mass murderers. Not today.

The author brought up some really compelling points. I'm probably on the mild end of the autistic spectrum, and I could see how a teen with those traits can start down such a path.

As far as Jeff's points go,
1. Good luck with that
2. Good luck with that

In fact, you see pretty much the same phenomenon with ISIS' ability to recruit young adults from from relatively comfortable situations.

One realistic thing that I think can help is to move away from a lowest common denominator schooling system where success is only measured by "no child left behind". How about a system where the bright and gifted (which would include many ASD juveniles) are challenged and promoted according to their ability. On second thought, good luck with that as well.
