I thought this was really neat...and also really depressing. http://www.sciencealert.com/this-timeline-shows-the-entire-history-of-the-universe-and-where-it-s-headed#.WI0pbZNIDxQ.facebook
I was completely unaware of the existence of natural nuclear reactors, and I think it's fascinating that such events could be detected and dated with such precision.

It was nice to find some non-political, interesting stuff on Facebook.

Also, it reminds me of one of my favorite Futurama episodes...the one where the Professor invents a time machine that only goes forward.

This is as good a time and place as any to ask, does 'G' after a number mean 'billions,' and why not a 'B'? I'm always tempted to read it as, 'X Gazillion Whatevers.'

I'm somewhat removed from the SI system in my job, but I think G is the SI prefix for billion. In oil and gas, M = 1000, MM = 1 million (1000 thousand), and wait for it... B = billion.

I recall reading claims of similar natural fission reactors elsewhere, including the United States, but I can't find any references online. Haven't searched very hard though.

I'm in the habit of using the SI prefixes with "ya" (years ago) for paleontological and archaeological events (e.g. "The Mesozoic ended 66Mya") but the technically correct use is "a ago", where "a" stands for annum; thus is should be "The Mesozoic ended 66Ma ago". I'll probably stick to my method because I'm used to it.

Ga is giga annum, Ma is mega annum, Ka is Kilo annum. Just think of it like they do with computers. I don't know why this is supposed to be better than just saying billion, million, and thousand though.

So you can giggle at 'em? ;)

I impression is it's disagreement over the definition of "billion" in the English-speaking world. In the United States, it means a thousand million, but in some other English-speaking countries, it means a million million.

Plus Greek is always cooler for geeky stuff.
