I can't make this up. Here are some quotes and miscellaneous other stuff from the lead author.

Quote:
“The investigators found that DEHP metabolite levels were not detectable in the blood samples of healthy children.”

Followed quickly by:

Quote:
“Although the DEHP levels decreased rapidly, they remained 18 times higher until discharge from the PICU compared with those of healthy children, he said.”

18 times higher than the undetectable level? I’m confused.

And then our master statistician says this:

Quote:
“This phthalate exposure explained half of the attention deficit in former PICU patients,” said Verstraete, adding that other factors may account for the other half.

So the other half couldn’t be explained by phthalate exposure?! I'm incredulous.

Sadly this is the state of publishing in the realm of phthalates/endocrine disruptors.

I can think of a few confounding factors related to being in intensive care that might affect long term cognitive ability. For one, the need to be in an icu in the first place.
